Book: Risk Science and Sustainability"Risk Science and Sustainability "

T. Beer and A. Ismail-Zadeh, eds
NATO Science, 2003, 25 euros

This book contains peer-reviewed papers and case studies derived from invited papers presented at the Euroecience-IUGG Workshop "Science for Reduction of Risk and Sustainable Development of Society", organised by Euroscience Workgroup "Science and Urgent Problems of Society" , which was held in Budapest on June 15-16, 2002, and supported by NATO.

These contributions address two key problems: (i) natural, technological and environmental risks, risk prevention and sustainable development, and (ii) science, risk and society. The papers provide an invaluable insight, and archival record of the relationship between risk, science, and society in a world that has become more turbulent since the tragic events of 11 September 2001. This book presents papers from scientists, policy makers, and practitioners on the topics of risk, sustainability, science, and society and is of value for natural and social scientists, teachers, students, economists, and politicians. It is also useful for authorities responsible for public safety, risk management, and risk mitigation plans, and for insurance companies.

This book can be ordered from Euroscience.

This book presents the thoughts and testimonies of mathematicians, teachers and economists, jurists, sociologists and anthropologists, biologists and physicians, from both North and South. It shows that scientific research and the defence of human rights share common values (aspiration to universality, regard for precision and transparency, critical spirit) and that they are enterprises called to join forces and throw light on each other, for better against worse.
