ESOF2010 COMPETITION: WHAT CAN SCIENCE DO FOR SOCIETY?

The role of science in contemporary society, from the point of view of young people

ESOF2010 intends to stimulate science education in schools through a specific School Programme that will involve both teachers and students, from Primary Schools to High Schools, with the aim of preparing them for ESOF2010.

The School Programme, that features various activities to be held during the school year 2009/2010, will include also a National Competition for High Schools called “WHAT CAN SCIENCE DO FOR SOCIETY?”.

The Competition aims at encouraging students to approach science in a creative way, asking them to produce a video clip focused on the role of science in contemporary society, under the coordination of their teachers.

Furthermore, the Competition point at encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to the proposed themes, by requiring the joint participation of teachers of various disciplines (not exclusively scientific). This choice is in line with the institutional commitment that in recent years has brought about, at several levels (local, national and European), the activation of a set of policies aimed at fostering teaching innovation as an essential tool for achieving greater competitiveness in the economic field, starting from the Lisbon Agenda that recognises the strategic role of the development of education and training systems, defining the competencies to focus investment on. In addition to language skills, these competencies are in mathematics, science and technology.

The competition will take place in Italy and in Catalonia, thanks to the support of the FCRI - Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació , and the winners of both the National Competitions will be invited in Torino to attend ESOF2010, where the Award Ceremony will take place. It will be a good occasion for students to meet students from other Countries that have worked on the same project, and compare their experiences in the keyframe of ESOF2010.

ESOF2010 strongly encourage the dissemination of the Competition in other European areas: if you are interested in handling the Competition in your Country please contact Alessia Dino, dino@esof2010.org.
