Held every two years, the EUROSCIENCE OPEN FORUM (ESOF) meeting, organised by Euroscience, is a unique opportunity for leading scientists, researchers, young researchers, business people, entrepreneurs and innovators, policy makers, science and technology communicators and the general public to discuss new discoveries and debate the direction that research is taking in the sciences, humanities and social sciences.
Typically, ESOF events are held within the city centre in order to give each meeting a unique cultural identity. Enriched by the multidisciplinary approach of the scientific programme combined with the science in the city programme, hosting ESOF would be
a key tourism opportunity.
Host ESOF to join the select few cities in the world that have successfully and uniquely bridged the gap between science and society whilst forging a Scientific European Identity.
The first successful ESOF meeting took place in Stockholm in August 2004 (www.esof2004.org). Since then, there have been two further superb meetings, one in Munich in July 2006 (www.esof2006.org), and the other in Barcelona in July 2008 (www.esof2008.org). Future editions of ESOF are to be held in Torino in July 2010 (www.esof2010.org) and in Dublin in 2012, both cities winning their election after stiff competition.
“It was a great honour for Barcelona to have been chosen to host ESOF2008. The strong scientific traditions of Barcelona were highlighted by this pan-European event.” Enric Banda, ESOF2008 Champion.
The selection process will be orchestrated by the ESOF Supervisory Board. This board comprises representatives from Euroscience, together with the Compagnia di San Paolo, Italy; Fondazione Cariplo, Italy; Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Sweden; Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH, Germany; Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, Germany.
