Miron Ya AMUSIA is a Professor of Physics at The Racah Institute of Physics at the
Hebrew University,
Jerusalem, Israel. After a PhD degree in
Physical and Mathematical Sciences from Leningrad State University, he was
engaged in teaching as junior scientist, senior scientist, leading scientist
and then visiting professor at the A.F.Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute,
CTSPS, Clark Atlanta University, Yamado Foundation, Imperial College London,
Hebrew University, University of Aarhus and Argonne National Laboratory. Miron
has also occupied various academic education and professional positions in the
Russian Ministry of Higher Education. He is a distinguished associate member,
board member or honorary advisory member of advisory boards, editorial panels
and organising committees of well-known international meetings and journals on
atomic physics. He has written a number of books and many social and political
publications and review articles. Miron won the P. L. Kapitz and B. P.
Konstantinov medal and price and he is a member of the Russian Academy of Natural
Sciences.
Martin ANDLER was born
in 1951, Martin Andler is a Professor of Mathematics at the Université de
Versailles Saint-Quentin (UVSQ). After a higher studies scholarship at the
Ecole Normale Supérieure and a doctorate in science from the Université Paris
7, he has pursued a teaching and research career (Université Paris 7, Ecole
normale supérieure, Rutgers University, Princeton university and MIT) and held
administrative positions as the editor of the Gazette des mathématiciens,
chairperson of the mathematics department of UVSQ, vice president of the Société
mathématique de France, president of Animath2. Martin currently sits as board
member of UVSQ, as associate member of the Comité d'initiative des Etats
généraux de la recherche and as representative for ‘Sauvons la Recherche’ to
the Initiative for Science in Europe, and was a team member for the Paris bid
for ESOF2010. Mathematics, history of mathematics, science communication,
science education and science in the media are his main research fields.
Enric BANDA
was born in Girona (Spain) in 1948. He is a solid Earth geophysicist.
He carried out a postdoctorate at the Federal Politechnical School in
Zurich where he participated in research projects at European scale. In
1987 he was appointed as Research Professor of Spanish National
Scientific Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas,
CSIC) and appointed Director of the Earth Sciences Institute in
Barcelona. In 1994 he was appointed General Secretary of the National
R+D Plan and in 1995 Secretary of State for Universities and Research
until May 1996. In November 1997 he was elected Secretary General of
the European Science Foundation, a position that he took over in June
1998 until the end of 2003. In 2004 he was appointed Director of the
Catalan Research and Innovation Foundation (FCRI) and of the Catalan
Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA).
He has been
vice-president of the European Geophysical Society. He is member of the
"European Academy", belongs to numerous scientific societies, and has
been editor-in-chief of Tectonophysics and European editor of
Geophysical Research Letters (American Geophysical Union). His research
work as geophysicist has focused on the structure and evolution of the
earth’s lithosphere in subjects related with both basic and applied
research. The main scientific lines can be included within seismology,
potential fields, tectonics and geodynamic modelling. He is author of
more than 160 scientific papers and has been invited to give
conferences in several European and American universities.
Gail CARDEW
is Head of Programmes at the Royal Institution, where she is
responsible for the strategic development of the Royal Institution's
science communication, science education and science policy activities.
She is co-Vice President of Euroscience, and a member of the EPSRC Peer
Review College, ScienceWise Grant Review Panel, Specialist Schools
Trust Science Expert Panel Group, Edinburgh Festival Planning
Committee, Euroscience Open Forum Programme Committees 2004-2006 and
European Science Policy Forum. She was a British Association Crest
Award Judge in 2003-2005, and a judge for the Altran Foundation Prize
for Innovation in 2005. She is the Royal Institution's representative
on the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. She obtained her DPhil
at Sussex University in 1994 on the regulation of the cell cycle; and
her First Class BSc Hons. Biology in 1989, also at Sussex University.
Corina CATANA was born
in 1964, Corina Catana is a Romanian senior lecturer in Plant Biotechnology.
After her doctorate in Genetics and Plant Breeding, she worked as a researcher,
assistant professor, lecturer and then senior lecturer in a laboratory of Plant
Physiology, Biological Research Institute and in Agricultural Sciences and
Veterinary Medicine Universities. She has participated in several NATO-Advanced
Study Projects and other multinational programmes in Italy, Belgium as well as
in the Erasmus mobility framework. She has conducted Bio-safety and biotechnology
projects, published 3 books, scientific papers and tutorial materials. Nelly is
an active member of ISBR, SNBC, ESNA, AFANet, European Association of Stevia
and of Euroscience since 2002.
Nelly DIDENKO was born
in 1945. She is a Russian citizen and Senior Researcher at the St.
Petersburg Physics and Technology Centre for Research and Education of the
Russian Academy of Sciences. After a PhD degree in programming and estimation
of the durability of three dimensional solid bodies, she undertook several
research and teaching posts before working as manager, senior manager,
assistant to professor then senior researcher alternatively at the St.
Petersburg Physico-Technical Scientific-Educated Centre, RFBR, Techoptimum and
Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute. She has participated in many
international conferences and written over 40 articles. Nelly still carries out
professional tasks either as engineer, executive member or as director of
SPASS, SPWAS, ES, ESWGTT and she is now the current coordinator of the
Euroscience Local Section in Russia.
Peter GREEN
has worked in advertising and public relations for over 30 years. From
the early 1970's he worked as a UK government publicity and press
officer for scientific and technical departments. His final two
government posts were as Head of Publishing and Publicity at the
Natural Resources Institute, the UK's tropical agricultural research
establishment, and Head of Information at the Particle Physics and
Astronomy Research Council. Whilst at PPARC Peter created the
AlphaGalileo European research news service. He is now working with
colleagues on the Communiqué initiative to enhance the role and
performance of the European press officers in research bodies.
Lauritz HOLM-NIELSEN was born
in 1946, Lauritz Holm-Nielsen is a Danish citizen. A botanist, after having
held posts as an associate professor, subsequently professor and
researcher at the Aarhus University (Denmark),
at the Danish Research
Academy, at the Universidad Católica (Ecuador) and an expatriation in the World Bank
headquarters, he was appointed Rector of the University of Aarhus
in 2005. He has written a total of 131 research publications and the latest
publication (2008) concerns the mobility of talents. He is involved as
chairman, member or representative in many organisations (NUS, DU, DRC, NAS,
DERP, NERC; DNSRC; DCDR, IPGRI, ICTA, ESRC, DANS), is a founding member of
Euroscience and was established Knight of First Class of the Order of
Dannebrog.
Michael GREWING
was born in 1940 in Hamburg (Germany). He specialized in astrophysics
after studying physics, mathematics and astronomy at the University of
Hamburg. In 1969 he became Associate Professor at the University of
Bonn, and later Full Professor for Astronomy at the University of
Tuebingen, and Director of the Astronomical Institute. From 1990-2005
he was Director of the French/German/Spanish Institute for
Radioastronomy at Millimeter-Wavelengths (IRAM) in Grenoble. His
research interests include the physics and chemistry of the
interstellar medium, the structure and evolution of envelopes around
highly evolved stars, the physics of pulsars/neutron stars, and of
QSOs. In addition to his data analysis and modeling work, he engaged in
the development and application of new observing techniques, both for
groundbased and for space experiments. Most of these projects were
carried out in bi-lateral or multi-lateral collaborations. Improving
the conditions for setting up international scientific collaborations
and related funding schemes will be main topics that he will pursue as
a member of the Euroscience Board.
Zinayida KLESTOVA
was born in 1957 in Ukraine. Her scientific field is Biology, with
investigations in pathogens of infectious diseases and creation means
against their. Some of her activities are : Managing of Postgraduate
students department, establishment of the Local Section of Euroscience
in Ukraine and promotion of the achievements of Ukrainian science on
international conferences. She aims to push society to better situation
thanks to a European cooperation, to integrate Ukraine in a stronger
Europe and develop new open multidisciplinary scientific area without
borders; and to develop the international cooperation between higher
education institutions, researcher institutions, scientific centers
with special attention on East-West relations.
Istvàn PALUGYAI was
born
in 1954, Istvan Palugyai is Hungarian. He attended a Journalist Academy
and
then conducted a thesis on behavioural genetics at the University of
Eotvos
Lorand before going for a 21st Century Trust's Fellowship (Cambridge,
UK). He
worked as a science editor, science reporter and dubbing controller for
Nepszabadsag, for Magyar Hírlap, and for Film Studio Pannonia. He was
also president,
general secretary of the Club of Hungarian Science Journalists (CHSJ),
president of the European Union of Science Journalist Associations
(EUSJA), and
vice president of the World Federation of Science Journalists. He was
awarded
the Hevesy Award, the Academicals Journalist Award, the Zooscar Award
etc.
After officiating as a TV moderator and editor of Those amazing animals
and Delta 2000, he wrote There, behind the bars, 1990, produced and
edited Safety Bio-industry, 2000, Safe Food, 2003, For
the habitable Earth, 2003 and Curing
with Biotechnology, 2002 (films). Istvan was also the president of the
Local Organizing Committee of the 2nd World Conference of Science
Journalists
supported by UNESCO.
Roland POCHET
is a Belgian Professor who was born in 1947. His scientific fields are
Cell Biology and Neuroscience. He has been an EMBO predoctoral fellow
and a NATO fellow. One of his achievement is the discovery of a new
calcium binding protein. He is the General Secretary of the European
Calcium Society. He is now involved in one neurodegenerative disease
(Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). He aims to promote Science in a higher
standard in terms of European value.
W. Gerhard POHL
was born in 1938 in Vienna, Austria. His scientific fields are
Biophysical Chemistry and History of Science. He is currently
vice-chairman of the working Party “History of Chemistry” of the
Austrian Chemical Society. His professional experience consists in
research and teaching in diverse countries. As member of Euroscience
his motivations are: articulating activities of Austrian science
educators on a European scope, furthering links between Central and
Eastern European countries, comparing science managing strategies of
European countries, and initiating cooperation between persons and
groups working in the field of history of science and technology.
Enrico PREDAZZI: Formerly Dean of Science (Univ. of Torino) and Chairman of the
National Conference of the Deans of Science of Italy (2001-2006).
Member of the Academy of Sciences of Torino and honorary member of the
Italian Physical Society. Professor of theoretical physics at the
University of Torino, has served as member of the National Executive
Board of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare).
Founder and
first President of Agorà Scienza a center of the Univ. of Torino for
promoting science. His research activity has been focussed on the
fields of theoretical high energy hadronic physics and the verification
of Quantum Mechanics. He is the author of over 260 publications in
international journals, of three research books and two teaching books.
Has given countless seminars on his research activity and
conferences on Science problems. Has been visiting professor for a
total of several years at a number of universities in the USA, UK,
CERN, Brazil, France, Germany, Russia etc.
Renzo RUBELE
was born in Verona (Italy) in 1969 and graduated in Physics at the
University of Padova. He is currently enrolled in a doctoral programme
at the University of Salerno, and his doctoral research is in the field
of Condensed Matter Theory.
He has been involved in the
associative life of young researchers since 2001 both at the national
and international level. In particular, he was Vice-President and later
President of EURODOC, the European-wide Federation of national
associations representing doctoral candidates and junior researchers.
He contributed to numerous European events and took part in committees
at the European Commission, among which a High-level Forum on
University-based Research.
Raymond SELTZ
was born in 1934 in France and obtained his doctorate in nuclear
physics from the University of Strasbourg. Over a period of 25 years
his research activities at CNRS were in experimental nuclear physics,
accelerator technology and use of nuclear radiations in agriculture and
industry. He has been director of the "Centre de Recherches Nucleaires-
Strasbourg" from 1982 to 1991. Member of scientific committees at CNRS
and CERN, he was a co-founder of NUPECC, the "Nuclear Physics European
Collaboration Committee" of ESF.
From 1991 to 2000 he was in charge
of the CNRS Bureau in Bonn (Germany) and joined the French Embassy as
scientific attaché with the mission of improving French-German
scientific collaboration.
Since 2000 he is the secretary general of
Euroscience at the office in Strasbourg with the task of leading and
co-ordinating Euroscience's activities.
Marie-Josée SIMOEN was born
in 1943 in
Wezembeek-Oppem (Belgium), Marie-Josée Simoen holds an Honorary Doctorate of
the University of Liège, and an Honorary Doctorate of the Gembloux Agricultural
University. She originally obtained a PhD in Political Science and
International Law (Université de Lille). She is either General secretary,
Governing Board member, representative or administrator of many Scientific
sesearch funds as F.R.S. - FNRS, Council of Rectors (CRef), King Léopold III's,
CERN, AUF, C.E.C.A.M, EUROHORCs, INSERM, CNRS, ESF, WERNAERS, Royal High Institute
for Defence, Belgian Federal Council for Science Policy, Academia Belgica,
Queen Elisabeth Medical Foundation, Brocher Foundation, Wallonia-Brussels
Group, Institut du Patrimoine Wallon (IPW), Simone et Pierre Clerdent
Foundation and HFSJG. Marie-Josée was nominated Chevalier de l'Ordre national
du mérite Français, Chevalier de l'Ordre national de la Légion d'Honneur,
Member of the Legion d'Honneur Society - Belgian section, Commander of the
Order of Leopold.
Carl Johan SUNDBERG
is a Licensed Physician and part-time Associate Professor at the Dpt of
Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet. His research
group is focused on molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis and
mitochondrial biogenesis in human skeletal muscle. He leads the Unit
for Bioentrepreneurship which is focused on educational and training
activities for students, clinicians and researchers. Carl Johan works
part-time as investment manager at Karolinska Investment Fund, a 65 M€
biomedical VC-firm. His role there is to find, assess, invest and
develop early stage companies. He is also the Course Director for three
highly acclaimed industry training programs: Science Based Companies,
Medicine for Journalists and Medicine/Drug Discovery for the Financial
Industry. Carl Johan Sundberg is Coordinator Science & Society at
the President's office at Karolinska Institutet and has extensive
experience from science communication having designed several medical
exhibitions at science centres and worked in the medical units of
Swedish and American media. He was the Chairman of Euroscience Open
Forum 2004. He has received the Karolinska Institutet Prize for
Teaching Excellence, a Certificate of Commendation for Communication in
the Life Sciences from EMBO, Ångpanneföreningen’s Prize for Research
Communication and the European Commission´s Descartes Communication
Prize for Excellence in Science Communication 2005. Carl Johan is a
board member of NsGene A/S and Angiogenetics AB.
Alma SWAN
was born in 1952 in London and trained as a biologist, obtaining a
first class honours degree in zoology and a PhD in cell biology from
the University of Southampton. After ten years in research and teaching
she moved into science publishing, managing a biological sciences
current awareness service from Elsevier and gaining an MBA from Warwick
Business School. Ten years ago she founded a consultancy specialising
in scholarly communication which carries out research for publishers
and public bodies on a broad range of topics in science publishing and
dissemination. She writes and speaks around the world about
developments in science and the concomitant appearance of new modes of
communication, and vice versa. Within Euroscience she hopes to further
progress on new developments in the communication and dissemination of
science research output, developments that increase the impact and
effectiveness of Europe's scientific effort.
Georges WAYSAND
is a French scientist who was born in 1941, and whose scientific field
is physics. He is currently the Director of the « Laboratoire
Souterrain Bas Bruit » de Rustrel-Pays d’Apt (Low Noise Underground
Laboratory in Rustrel-Pays d’Apt). He was initially trained in optical
pumping, and then joined the CNRS to work on Superconductivity. He
devoted time to “science and society” issues too. As member of
Euroscience he insists on building up a permanent dialog between
scientists and European ordinary people.
