Enric BANDA was born in Girona (Spain) in 1948. He is a solid Earth geophysicist. He carried out a postdoctorate at the Federal Politechnical School in Zurich where he participated in research projects at European scale. In 1987 he was appointed as Research Professor of Spanish National Scientific Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) and appointed Director of the Earth Sciences Institute in Barcelona. In 1994 he was appointed General Secretary of the National R+D Plan and in 1995 Secretary of State for Universities and Research until May 1996. In November 1997 he was elected Secretary General of the European Science Foundation, a position that he took over in June 1998 until the end of 2003. In 2004 he was appointed Director of the Catalan Research and Innovation Foundation (FCRI) and of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA).
He has been vice-president of the European Geophysical Society. He is member of the "European Academy", belongs to numerous scientific societies, and has been editor-in-chief of Tectonophysics and European editor of Geophysical Research Letters (American Geophysical Union). His research work as geophysicist has focused on the structure and evolution of the earth’s lithosphere in subjects related with both basic and applied research. The main scientific lines can be included within seismology, potential fields, tectonics and geodynamic modelling. He is author of more than 160 scientific papers and has been invited to give conferences in several European and American universities.

Vsevolod BORISOV was born in 1937 in Russia. His main scientific field is the protein crystallography and molecular biology. In addition to his involvement in problems of education in science (as a member of Education Commission of Moscow City Council; as a Director of International Soros Science Education Program, etc), he works on problems of Russian legislation concerning science and technologies. Within Euroscience he aims to consolidate Russian scientists to be built in all-European Science (European Research Area), to established close contacts with Euroscience of Russian scientific diaspora and to bring young Russian scientists in activities of European junior scientific associations. He is also a convenor of the Euroscience work group on education.

Philippe BUSQUIN
was born in 1941. Currently and since 2004, Philippe Busquin is member of the European Parliament. Full member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and substitute of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, he is member of the Parliamentary delegation EU-China. Chairman of the STOA (Scientific Technology Options Assessment), he also chairs the "Sky & Space" Intergroup. His current political action is a continuation of his achievements as European Commissioner in charge of research policies from 1999 to 2004. He has a scientific academic background (Degree in Physics, first degree in philosophy and postgraduate certificate in environmental studies). Philippe Busquin was member of the Belgian Parliament for more than 25 years and had ministerial posts for twenty years. In the cultural field, he chairs the "Domaine du Château de Seneffe" (Museum of orfevrery and Castle of the French Community of Belgium) and "Charleroi Danses" (choreographic centre of the French community).

Gail CARDEW
, is Head of Programmes at the Royal Institution, where she is responsible for the strategic development of the Royal Institution's science communication, science education and science policy activities. She is co-Vice President of Euroscience, and a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, ScienceWise Grant Review Panel, Specialist Schools Trust Science Expert Panel Group, Edinburgh Festival Planning Committee, Euroscience Open Forum Programme Committees 2004-2006 and European Science Policy Forum. She was a British Association Crest Award Judge in 2003-2005, and a judge for the Altran Foundation Prize for Innovation in 2005. She is the Royal Institution's representative on the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. She obtained her DPhil at Sussex University in 1994 on the regulation of the cell cycle; and her First Class BSc Hons. Biology in 1989, also at Sussex University.

Jean-Patrick CONNERADE, outgoing President of Euroscience, was born in 1943 and has the French and British nationality. He has been a researcher (in anatomic, molecular and cluster physics) over a period of more than 35 years, and has worked in Italy, in Germany, in France and (mostly) in the UK. He was honorary treasurer of the Save British Science Society for fifteen years. He is a fellow of the Institute of Physics and a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, etc… He is currently chairing the programme committee of ESOF, and he also sit on the external advisory group of the European Commission dealing with the Marie Curie programme. His motivation is to expand Euroscience and to make it an effective voice of scientists in Europe, so that they can better influence science policy in the future.

Jens DEGETT was born in 1959 in Denmark, and his scientific field is Biology. He is the head of two units at the ESF, the Communication and the Information unit. He is responsible for organizing meetings, policies and press releases at the European level for 76 ESF member organizations in 29 countries, a website with about 4.3 million hits a month, and the publication of a number of magazines, books, brochures and other printed materials for the European research community. The ESF produces about 50 publications a year. He would like to support the PR activities of Euroscience, enhance the influence of Euroscience on European science policy, and help the organisation getting a closer link to its members by suggesting activities where more members can be involved.

Peter GREEN has worked in advertising and public relations for over 30 years. From the early 1970's he worked as a UK government publicity and press officer for scientific and technical departments. His final two government posts were as Head of Publishing and Publicity at the Natural Resources Institute, the UK's tropical agricultural research establishment, and Head of Information at the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council. Whilst at PPARC Peter created the AlphaGalileo European research news service. He is now working with colleagues on the Communiqué initiative to enhance the role and performance of the European press officers in research bodies.

Michael GREWING was born in 1940 in Hamburg (Germany). He specialized in astrophysics after studying physics, mathematics and astronomy at the University of Hamburg. In 1969 he became Associate Professor at the University of Bonn, and later Full Professor for Astronomy at the University of Tuebingen, and Director of the Astronomical Institute. From 1990-2005 he was Director of the French/German/Spanish Institute for Radioastronomy at Millimeter-Wavelengths (IRAM) in Grenoble. His research interests include the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium, the structure and evolution of envelopes around highly evolved stars, the physics of pulsars/neutron stars, and of QSOs. In addition to his data analysis and modeling work, he engaged in the development and application of new observing techniques, both for groundbased and for space experiments. Most of these projects were carried out in bi-lateral or multi-lateral collaborations. Improving the conditions for setting up international scientific collaborations and related funding schemes will be main topics that he will pursue as a member of the Euroscience Board.

Christine HELLER DEL RIEGO
was born in 1967 and has both Spanish and North American nationality. Her scientific field is Electrical Engineering and she is a tenured professor of Electric Machines at the University Pontificia Comillas in Madrid. After obtaining her Ph.D. from the University of Paris VI, P. et M. Curie with a HCM Mobility Grant, she was a Board Member of the Marie Curie Fellowship Association (1998-2000). She has co-organised numerous career development activities and acts as the coordinator of the Career Development Workgroup. Having contributed to the organization of ESOF2004, she intends to set up a Local Iberian Section to enhance collaboration between Spain and Portugal through Euroscience activities.

Benedikt HOFFMANN
works for an international strategy consulting company. His current work focuses on the financial and health care sector. He was trained as a biologist. During his PhD studies at the INRA (Reims, France) and the Botanical Garden (University of Freiburg, Germany) he investigated how the design of lianas can be used to improve man made composite materials. Based on this experience he is also board member of the German research network “Plants as models for the development of biomimetic materials and technologies” which comprises working groups from academia and industry. Within Euroscience he promotes together with other board members the topics “PhD mobility” and “Networking with industry”.

Zanaida KLESTOVA was born in 1957 in Ukraine. Her scientific field is Biology, with investigations in pathogens of infectious diseases and creation means against their. Some of her activities are : Managing of Postgraduate students department, establishment of the Local Section of Euroscience in Ukraine and promotion of the achievements of Ukrainian science on international conferences. She aims to push society to better situation thanks to a European cooperation, to integrate Ukraine in a stronger Europe and develop new open multidisciplinary scientific area without borders; and to develop the international cooperation between higher education institutions, researcher institutions, scientific centers with special attention on East-West relations.

Anthony MAYER is a British geologist, born in 1942. He has worked in research and in research administration and management at both the national (research council) and the European levels. He has worked in ESF and was, until recently, the Director of the COST Office in Brussels. Now working as an independent consultant, he acts as a part-time senior science policy adviser to ESF and is the Scientific Secretary of the EC’s European research Advisory Board (EURAB) He has been involved in FP Programme Management Committees and various EC committees. In addition to the Commission, he has dealt with the senior levels of the EU Council, the European Parliament and various European agencies. He was first elected to the Governing Board in 2002 and was appointed treasurer of Euroscience in 2004.

Roland POCHET is a Belgian Professor who was born in 1947. His scientific fields are Cell Biology and Neuroscience. He has been an EMBO predoctoral fellow and a NATO fellow. One of his achievement is the discovery of a new calcium binding protein. He is the General Secretary of the European Calcium Society. He is now involved in one neurodegenerative disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). He aims to promote Science in a higher standard in terms of European value.

W. Gerhard POHL was born in 1938 in Vienna, Austria. His scientific fields are Biophysical Chemistry and History of Science. He is currently vice-chairman of the working Party “History of Chemistry” of the Austrian Chemical Society. His professional experience consists in research and teaching in diverse countries. As member of Euroscience his motivations are: articulating activities of Austrian science educators on a European scope, furthering links between Central and Eastern European countries, comparing science managing strategies of European countries, and initiating cooperation between persons and groups working in the field of history of science and technology.

Enrico PREDAZZI : Formerly Dean of Science (Univ. of Torino) and Chairman of the National Conference of the Deans of Science of Italy (2001-2006). Member of the Academy of Sciences of Torino and honorary member of the Italian Physical Society. Professor of theoretical physics at the University of Torino, has served as member of the National Executive Board of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare).
Founder and first President of Agorà Scienza a center of the Univ. of Torino for promoting science. His research activity has been focussed on the fields of theoretical high energy hadronic physics and the verification of Quantum Mechanics. He is the author of over 260 publications in international journals, of three research books and two teaching books.
Has given countless seminars on his research activity and conferences on Science problems. Has been visiting professor for a total of several years at a number of universities in the USA, UK, CERN, Brazil, France, Germany, Russia etc.

Didier RABOUD
was born in 1968 in Switzerland. His scientific field is Astrophysics. He trained in physics at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the University of Lausanne and at the University of Geneva where he obtained his PhD in astronomy. He then headed the "Passerelle Science-Cité", a science communication group, for 5 years. He is currently the Head of the communication department of the University of Geneva. Within Euroscience, he is the President of the Leman Section and he wants to promote direct contacts between science and the general public, and between the scientists and the public.

Renzo RUBELE
was born in Verona (Italy) in 1969 and graduated in Physics at the University of Padova. He is currently enrolled in a doctoral programme at the University of Salerno, and his doctoral research is in the field of Condensed Matter Theory. He has been involved in the associative life of young researchers since 2001 both at the national and international level. In particular, he was Vice-President and later President of EURODOC, the European-wide Federation of national associations representing doctoral candidates and junior researchers. He contributed to numerous European events and took part in committees at the European Commission, among which a High-level Forum on University-based Research.

Raymond SELTZ was born in 1934 in France and obtained his doctorate in nuclear physics from the University of Strasbourg. Over a period of 25 years his research activities at CNRS were in experimental nuclear physics, accelerator technology and use of nuclear radiations in agriculture and industry. He has been director of the "Centre de Recherches Nucleaires- Strasbourg" from 1982 to 1991. Member of scientific committees at CNRS and CERN, he was a co-founder of NUPECC, the "Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee" of ESF.
From 1991 to 2000 he was in charge of the CNRS Bureau in Bonn (Germany) and joined the French Embassy as scientific attaché with the mission of improving French-German scientific collaboration.
Since 2000 he is the secretary general of Euroscience at the office in Strasbourg with the task of leading and co-ordinating Euroscience's activities.

Carl Johan SUNDBERG is a Licensed Physician and part-time Associate Professor at the Dpt of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet. His research group is focused on molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis and mitochondrial biogenesis in human skeletal muscle. He leads the Unit for Bioentrepreneurship which is focused on educational and training activities for students, clinicians and researchers. Carl Johan works part-time as investment manager at Karolinska Investment Fund, a 65 M€ biomedical VC-firm. His role there is to find, assess, invest and develop early stage companies. He is also the Course Director for three highly acclaimed industry training programs: Science Based Companies, Medicine for Journalists and Medicine/Drug Discovery for the Financial Industry. Carl Johan Sundberg is Coordinator Science & Society at the President's office at Karolinska Institutet and has extensive experience from science communication having designed several medical exhibitions at science centres and worked in the medical units of Swedish and American media. He was the Chairman of Euroscience Open Forum 2004. He has received the Karolinska Institutet Prize for Teaching Excellence, a Certificate of Commendation for Communication in the Life Sciences from EMBO, Ångpanneföreningen’s Prize for Research Communication and the European Commission´s Descartes Communication Prize for Excellence in Science Communication 2005. Carl Johan is a board member of NsGene A/S and Angiogenetics AB.

Alma SWAN
was born in 1952 in London and trained as a biologist, obtaining a first class honours degree in zoology and a PhD in cell biology from the University of Southampton. After ten years in research and teaching she moved into science publishing, managing a biological sciences current awareness service from Elsevier and gaining an MBA from Warwick Business School. Ten years ago she founded a consultancy specialising in scholarly communication which carries out research for publishers and public bodies on a broad range of topics in science publishing and dissemination. She writes and speaks around the world about developments in science and the concomitant appearance of new modes of communication, and vice versa. Within Euroscience she hopes to further progress on new developments in the communication and dissemination of science research output, developments that increase the impact and effectiveness of Europe's scientific effort.

Peter TINDEMANS
is Dutch, holds a PhD in theoretical physics and 58 years. His interest in science and society issues goes back to the late 60-ties when he co-founded the Physics and Society group at Leiden University. He was a board member and international secretary of the Verbond van Wetenschappelijke Onderzoekers and on the Executive Committee of the World Federation of Scientific Workers. He pursued a career in science, technology and innovation policy, co-ordinated Dutch Innovation Policy in 1979 and became responsible for the whole research and science policy in the Netherlands. Heavily involved in all European Framework Programmes, he chaired the OECD Megascience Forum during its whole lifetime. Since 1998 he works independently in helping countries e.g. in Africa and the Middle-East set up their STI policies and research and education systems, is heavily involved in large infrastructures for science in Europe, e.g. by chairing the European Spallation Source efforts, and also in regional innovation policies. He is a founder member of Euroscience, a Governing Board member in 2001-2004, convenor of the Science Policy Working Group and has been instrumental in creating on behalf of Euroscience together with the European Life Sciences Forum and e.g. the ESF the Initiative for Science in Europe, a platform for all European organizations in science and technology.

Georges WAYSAND
is a French scientist who was born in 1941, and whose scientific field is physics. He is currently the Director of the « Laboratoire Souterrain Bas Bruit » de Rustrel-Pays d’Apt (Low Noise Underground Laboratory in Rustrel-Pays d’Apt). He was initially trained in optical pumping, and then joined the CNRS to work on Superconductivity. He devoted time to “science and society” issues too. As member of Euroscience he insists on building up a permanent dialog between scientists and European ordinary people.
