Second French-Serbian Summer University: “Water quality control and health. From concepts to action” Vrnjacka Banja , Serbia, 6-13 October 2007.
Consortium partners are: Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences,Belgrade; French Academy of Sciences; Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie , I.E.M./UM II, Montpellier,France; International Centre of Biodynamics, Bucharest; West University of Timisoara, Timisoara.
The water problem is one of the most important problems in the world to day. The research in this field is strongly supported by the Academies of sciences and the scientific community in the South-East European region.
To give the essential information about new environmental technologies on one of the most important element for life : water; To enable South-East European countries to participate in developing and application of new environmental technologies through collaboration with the French Academy of Sciences, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie , I.E.M./UM II, Montpellier on concept of membranes technics; To establish stronger scientific cooperation between South-East European countries through shared activity on membranes technics ; To create a coherent framework for all consortium partners and other countries from region to participate in developing and application of new environmental technologies.
We plan to achieve our goals through the knowledge transfer from the French Academy of Sciences and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie , I.E.M./UM II, Monpellier as the leading institution in this field. At the same time this Summer University should serve to establish dynamic and long-term scientific connections among PhD students in the South Eastern Europe. Third South-East European schools for Hands-on primary science education Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia, 13-18 October 2007
Due to the interest expressed by some participants during the first and second « South-East European summer school for Hands-on primary science education », Serbia, June, 2005, and November 2006, the needs of improving science education in this region, and strongly support of the Science Academies grouped into the InterAcademy Panel (IAP), French Academy of Sciences, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts…: Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Euroscience-section for Serbia, A.K.M.Edukacija have decide to organize an international school dedicated to primary science education named: « Third South-East European schools for Hands-on primary science education », Serbia, October 13-18, 2007.
This Summer school will be the opportunity for Primary science South-East European and Central European trainers to formalize and share their experience in the field of Hands-on primary science education, exchanging good practices and defining common basis for Hands - on teaching and training in primary and kindergarten schools.
Summer school issues will provide recommendations for successful in-service trainings organization at Central European and manly in South-East European level.
The Serbian Section of EUROSCIENCE has organised, in the autumn of 2003 and beginning of 2004, lively and well-attended science cafes on: “50 Years of DNA”, “Sciences in Schools: When? How? And How Much?”, “Molecular Biotechnology” and “Collaboration of Serbian-French researchers in the framework of the project "La Main à la Pâte”, some of which were reported on the national TV channel (Belgrade) and in local newspapers. All events were chaired by Stevan Jokic, Convenor of the Serbian Regional Section.
Science in primary school
Thanks to Mapmonde, an international network promoting teaching of science in primary schools Serbia actively participates in the creation of a webpage in the framework of mapmonde. As a start, we have translated some documents for the use of primary school teachers. In the very near future we will organise the network of scientific consultants (researchers, professors and engineers assisting teachers in answering questions raised on sciences. The project is best summarised by the father of "la Main à la Pâte" Georges Charpak, Nobel Prize :
"We have found in France considerable help from the participation of students, from universities or engineering schools, the Ecole de Physique et Chimie de la Ville de Paris. About 60 students spent one hour every week in elementary school classes, together with teachers. We have also taught the teachers to say to the children, after a class : “I have no answer to your question, wait until tomorrow or next week.” And we have installed a website where they will find 70 scientists who will answer their question in less than 48 hours." Georges Charpak
We hope that this kind of activity could be interested for our colleagues from Euroscience Regional Sections in other Balkan countries and we could create an International network of Balkan scientists ready to help teachers in the primary schools from the area.
