EuroScience welcomes very much that these important umbrella organisations of institutions in the world of science speak up for the necessity to guarantee freedom and autonomy with a particular but not exclusive reference to recent events around the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. They are vital for the health of the scientific endeavour without which science cannot deliver on its promises for society. We should all keep pressing governments to stand firm for these values within their own countries and in contacts with others. EuroScience has written in February to Prime Minister Orbán of Hungary to urge him to guarantee the Academy’s autonomy, and expressed its strong support for the Academy.
