ESOF (EuroScience Open Forum) is the largest interdisciplinary science meeting in Europe. It is dedicated to scientific research and innovation and offers a unique framework for interaction and debate for scientists, innovators, policy makers, business people and the general public. Created in 2004 by EuroScience, this biennial European forum brings together over 4,000 researchers, educators, business actors, policy makers and journalists from all over the world to discuss breakthroughs in science and give them a platform for discussions on science and society, policy and business issues. The first successful ESOF meeting took place in Stockholm in August 2004. Since then, there have been six further meetings: Munich 2006, Barcelona 2008, Torino 2010, Dublin 2012, Copenhagen 2014 and Manchester 2016. ESOF 2018 will be in Toulouse.
In June 2016, EuroScience launched a call to invite cities, countries, regions or local, regional or national consortia to submit bids to host ESOF 2020. Specific efforts were made to attract cities in Central and Eastern Europe but although we have been heartened by the interest from several CEE cities/countries, we regretfully have not yet been able to receive preliminary bids from this region. We sincerely hope that ESOF 2022 could be organized there.
After careful consideration by the ESOF Supervisory Committee, the following cities will be invited to submit full bids by June 15 2017 to host ESOF and become European City of Science 2020:
- The combination Leiden/The Hague in the Netherlands
- Trieste in Italy
The final decision on the host for ESOF 2020 will be made public in June 2017. The ESOF Supervisory Committee wishes to thank all cities who have submitted preliminary bids.
