On Thursday, September 22nd, The Planetarium of the Silesian Science Park hosted the press conference officializing the cooperation between the different partners of the Consortium which will organize the European City of Science 2024 in Katowice. During this press conference, the members of the Consortium signed a cooperation agreement which sets the framework for the next European City of Science in Katowice including the organization of the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) in 2024.
Representatives of the consortium stressed the importance of joint action and the opportunity represented by the title of European City of Science 2024, for the whole region. Matthias Girod, Secretary General of EuroScience, also emphasized on the fact that Katowice is the first city in central and eastern Europe to receive this prestigious award.
The agreement was signed by: the president of Katowice, the Voivode of Silesia, the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship, the chairman and vice-chairman of the Board of the Upper Silesian – Zagłębie Metropolis and the rectors of the universities affiliated to the academic consortium “Katowice-the city of Science”: the University of Silesia, the Silesian University of Technology, the Silesian Medical University, the University of Economics in Katowice, the J. Kukuczki, the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice and the Szymanowski Academy of music.
At this occasion, the logo of the European city of science 2024 prepared by designers from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, was also presented to the public. It symbolizes the members of the consortium and was initiated by the rector of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice, Prof. Dr. Hab. Grzegorz hańderek.
The decision to award Katowice the title of European City of Science was made in December 2021, and the official handover took place on July 16, 2022 in Leiden, The Netherlands during the ESOF Closing Ceremony.
