SCI – DOC, watch the best science film productions via our dissemination events

A new development is taking place in relation to SCI-DOC, the Science TV & New Media Festival and subsequent Awards Evening, where scientists and science TV and New Media producers are awarded for their work in raising awareness of science for the general public. The organizers of the SCI-DOC Festival, representing both European and Portuguese interests, decided last year that the quality and thought provoking nature of the programmes was of such quality that we should try and share the opportunity of seeing and discussing them more widely across Europe. So following a successful pilot, we will now be holding events in at least four countries featuring leading productions from the last Festival in 2016.

TWO EVENTS ARE THIS NOVEMBER

In Dublin, the Science Gallery is hosting an afternoon and evening event on Thursday 16 November during their Science Week. Five very different films are featured, from David Attenborough exploring the extraordinary ways living creatures produce and use light, to a rare insight into how the Himalayas reveal evidence of global warming. See the running order.

In the panel sessions, we shall be focusing particularly on two of the prize-winning films. One is from New Decade TV and Film for RTE Ireland, called BodyTech; and the other from Scientifilms, a French production company for ARTE, the Franco-German channel, called The Key to Consciousness: A Journey into the Stuff of Thoughts. Leading members of the production teams and scientists involved are among the panelists. But the other films being screened also embody some fascinating insights and filming skills. We hope people from whatever background enjoy the day – either as a whole or a la carte – and that the event will prove thought-provoking as well as fun.

The Festival organizers would like to express their appreciation to the Science Gallery and to the Science Foundation Ireland who are supporting the Day.

The Science Museum of the University of Coimbra, in Portugal, is planning to organise during the Portuguese Science Week 21-24 November screenings of the best productions from last year’s SCI-DOC and a series of workshops/discussions related to the films.

TWO EVENTS ARE JUNE/JULY 2018

The European Organization for Nuclear Research – CERN is organizing in the CERN GLOBE a SCI-DOC dissemination event on 5 June, which is the World Environment day.

Another dissemination event is being prepared during the EuroScience Open Forum ESOF, between 9 – 14 July 2018 in Toulouse.
