Meet the Expert is an event that connects early career researchers and leading science professionals in an informal debate where they share questions and ideas on the direction of their research, careers and future paths.
The purpose of this workshop is to analyze and understand the motivation of why science-engaged professionals want to participate in organizations, and what are the mechanisms that successfully welcome participation in constructive activities that can make a difference. The workshop is targeted towards EuroScience members, as well as potential members from all areas in which science is produced and/or used, such as researchers, journalists, teachers, politicians, etc.
Scientists and researchers are needed to provide scientific advice and the basis of policy solutions to policymakers, but many find themselves unsure about the most effective path to transcend from science to policy. Familiarity with the special dimensions of science policy and the finer nuances of communicating with policymakers may not come naturally, nor does the understanding of the crucial role of research ethics and integrity in making a meaningful contribution to the science–policy interface.
The academic job market has gradually become more competitive for PhD graduates and the opportunities for attaining a tenure track position are limited. A large number of PhD graduates exit academia and develop their professional careers in an industry setting. It is argued that such transition could be facilitated by fostering an entrepreneurial mindset during doctoral education.
