The traditional handover of the European City of Science took place at the closing ceremony of ESOF2022 in Leiden. EuroScience President Mike Matlosz, handed the ceremonial key to the European City of Science over to Marcin Krupa, the Mayor of Katowice in Poland, the European City of Science 2024.

The award ceremony took place on 15 July 2022, (16:00 – 17:00 CEST) in Stadsgehoorzaal: meeting room Aalmarktzaal, Leiden, the Netherlands and was also simultaneously broadcasted to all online ESOF delegates. The three finalists presented their research to the public and the winners of the two awards were announced during the ceremony.

At the traditional ESOF Presidents Reception, EuroScience President Michael Matlosz thanked Jean-Eric Paquet, Director General of the Departement for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, for his support and help for the European City of Science 2022! Mr. Paquet was awarded the first Honorary Citizenship of the European City of Science by EuroScience.

The purpose of this workshop is to analyze and understand the motivation of why science-engaged professionals want to participate in organizations, and what are the mechanisms that successfully welcome participation in constructive activities that can make a difference. The workshop is targeted towards EuroScience members, as well as potential members from all areas in which science is produced and/or used, such as researchers, journalists, teachers, politicians, etc.

Scientists and researchers are needed to provide scientific advice and the basis of policy solutions to policymakers, but many find themselves unsure about the most effective path to transcend from science to policy. Familiarity with the special dimensions of science policy and the finer nuances of communicating with policymakers may not come naturally, nor does the understanding of the crucial role of research ethics and integrity in making a meaningful contribution to the science–policy interface.

The academic job market has gradually become more competitive for PhD graduates and the opportunities for attaining a tenure track position are limited. A large number of PhD graduates exit academia and develop their professional careers in an industry setting. It is argued that such transition could be facilitated by fostering an entrepreneurial mindset during doctoral education.

The Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-Stiftung in collaboration with EuroScience have opened a call for travel grants to cover young researchers’ cost of travel, registration, and accommodation to attend ESOF2022 in Leiden, the Netherlands. The CALL for travel grants to ESOF2022 is dedicated to PhD candidates and Postdocs studying or working in the field of physics or in an interdisciplinary field of physics and who are based in Germany, irrespective of their nationality. Swedish Research Council in collaboration with EuroScience have opened a call for travel grants to cover young researchers’ cost of travel, registration, and accommodation to attend ESOF2022 in Leiden, the Netherlands. The CALL for travel grants to ESOF2022 is dedicated to Young Researchers based in Sweden irrespective of their nationality as well as to Swedish nationals studying/working in any European country (as defined by the Council of Europe). EuroScience and the ESOF Supervisory Board are proud to announce that the EuroScience Open Forum 2020 will be hosted from 4 to 10 July 2020 in Trieste, Italy, and that ESOF 2022 will be organized by Leiden/The Hague, The Netherlands, in July 2022. We received two impressive and solid full bids from Trieste and Leiden/The Hague, and we wish to recognize both cities’ credentials to become the European City of Science in 2020, respectively 2022.
